The Prophet's Reward
continued from yesterday
There is yet one more facet of the prophet’s reward that I want to look at and it may well be the most important facet of it. All this talk about not touching the Lord’s anointed sounds good for me doesn’t it. You have to say “yes” don’t you. You don’t want to be guilty on not blessing me.
But there is another side to this that is just as important and that’s that you too are the Lord’s anointed. And I have no more right to assault you as your pastor as you have to assault me.
The primary idea behind the prophet’s reward is that the blessings conferred upon the prophet, by receiving him, are then amassed upon those who receive the prophet. In other words, the blessings that rest upon the prophet, are transferred to those who bless the prophet.
Before you were saved – did you ever pray for someone to be miraculously healed? Yet now that you are saved you have not only license to do that – but you also have an anointing to do it. And that is because when we received Jesus into our lives he began to pray for us and now his blessing becomes ours.
We have the power to pray for people. When we pray for people there lives are blessed just as our lives are blessed because Jesus is praying for us.

Two years ago today around 4:50pm a Tornado changed the history of our church forever. Do these pictures bring back memories??

Today we are back in the building worshiping our God once again. God was with us through the whole ordeal. We continued to worship together through the generosity of Lakeshore Tabernacle as they allowed us the use of their chapel. In fact we never really missed a beat. The tornado hit us on a Tuesday and by Thursday of that week we had a prayer meeting and on Sunday we had our first post-tornado worship service. Last Sunday our church was packed out. We had to set up extra chairs. We have a Saturday evening service and a Sunday morning service. All of our ministries are operating and doing great things for God. If you would like to see a video of the tornado damage you can see it on Utube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiT0YppSTWk&feature=related

The Prophets Reward
continued from yesterday

To be blessed of the Lord means that God is praying for you.

John 17:6,8 "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word…(8) For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.

The word “accepted” in verse eight is the Greek word "lam-ban-oo" which means receive. To receive the words of Christ is the same as receiving Christ. Some people struggle with receiving the Words of Christ. Some people second guess the Word of God – they are not sure if they should really take it into their hearts.
That is the problem Matthew was up against. The gospels had not even been written yet – nobody was studying the written New Testament during his day. All they had to go on was the Old Testament prophecies which Christ had completely fulfilled thus validating who He was. Matthew was saying to those who were being persecuted because of the faith to trust the words of the prophets. To trust those words is equivalent to receiving them.
The problem with not receiving the word of God is that you cannot receive the blessing or reward which goes along with receiving. Look at what Jesus says about those who received his words, and those who didn’t – in the next verse.
John 17:9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world.

The prophet’s reward is that the prophet prays for those who receive him – but he does not pray for those who refuse to receive Him. Those who are blessed of the Lord are those whom Jesus is praying for right now.

Hebrews 7:25 says that Jesus ever lives to make intercession. In other words Jesus spends His time praying for those whom the Lord has given Him. Do you want to get in on that blessing? Receive his word. Receive Him. The moment you do – your name is brought before him in his prayer room. Can you imagine that?
Now let’s look at another aspect of receiving the prophet. First of all the word Prophet is the Greek word “Pro-phee-teen” which is does not exclusively describe our classic understanding of a prophet. It does not just describe someone who foretells the future. The word also includes teachers, or pastors, or basically anyone commissioned by God to teach the doctrines of eternal life. The prophet’s reward goes to anyone who receives any man of God.
What I’m about to say might sound like I’m setting myself up but you must believe me that that is not my intention. My purpose is to teach you the word of God so that you can partake in the blessings that come from it.
I’m going to read a quote here from Matthew Henry, “It is no small honor to receive into one's house a minister of Jesus Christ. Every person is not admitted to exercise the sacred ministry; but none are excluded from partaking of its grace, its spirit, and its reward. If the teacher should be weak, or even if he should be found afterward to have been worthless, yet the person who has received him in the name, under the sacred character, of a pastor, teacher, prophet, or evangelist,, shall not lose his reward; because what he did he did for the sake of Christ.”
Many sayings of this kind are found among the rabbinical teachings. One of the most common is this one: "He who receives a learned man, or an elder, into his house, is the same as if he had received the Shekinah glory of God."
Now listen to this; there are just as many rabbinical teaching that speak to the opposite scenario. Such as; "He who speaks against a faithful pastor, it is the same as if he had spoken against God himself."
Keep in mind that these are rabbinical sayings, are not necessarily scripture verses but certainly the prophet’s reward is the spirit behind the verse which says; “Touch not the Lord’s anointed.”
Remember how King Abimelech was in fear of his life for having taken the prophet Abraham’s wife, yet when he found out who she was he told God that he had a pure heart in the matter. Look at how God responds to him.

Genesis 20:6 Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her.

Abraham’s wife was also considered the Lord’s anointed. That is why God said, I have kept you from sinning against me by not allowing you to touch her. Touch not the Lord’s anointed. To assault the Lord’s anointed, whether in word or deed, is to reap the opposite benefit of those who bless the Lord’s anointed. Those who bless the Lord’s anointed are blessed of the Lord because Jesus prays for them. But those who curse the Lord’s anointed are those whom the Lord says He does not pray for. Which category do you want to be in?

The Prophet's Reward
continued from yesterday
I’m sure most of you have read the account of Abraham in Genesis chapter 20.
Abraham was living in an area called Gerar. He and his wife Sarah decided to not let the King know that Sarah was his wife because Abraham did not believe that King Abimelech was a godly man and that he would simply kill Abraham in order to get his wife if he knew Sarah was Abraham’s wife.

Genesis 20:3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, "You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman."

If God ever comes to you and says, “You are as good as a dead man,” you are not going to have a good nights sleep. So Abimelech finds out that Sarah is Abraham’s wife and asks God to forgive him. Afterwards Abimelech asks Abraham why he did what he did.

Genesis 20:11-12 Abraham replied, "I said to myself, 'There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.' (12) Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.

So far the moral of this story is; don’t marry your stepsister even if she is beautiful. Fortunately for Abraham there was a fear of God in that place and the Lord was able to speak to the King to tell him to give Abraham his wife back.

Genesis 20:7 Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all yours will die."

Of all the research I did – this verse is considered the one which describes the prophet’s reward. If you receive a prophet he will pray for you. The reward for receiving a prophet is that you get prayed for by the prophet.

Genesis 20:17 Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave girls so they could have children again.

When we say that someone is blessed of the Lord, what are we getting at? What does it mean to be blessed of God? I now believe it relates to the prophet’s reward. It basically means that God is praying for you. When you receive Christ into your heart – he prays for you.

Coffee

In a rush to work one morning, I pulled up to the drive-through window at a fast-food restaurant and ordered some coffee.

Because I was in a hurry, I asked them to put a couple of ice cubes in the coffee so it would cool down more quickly and I could drink it faster.

I sat there at the pick-up window for a few minutes, wondering where they had to go to get my coffee, when a frustrated teenager finally came up and said, "I'm sorry for the delay, but the ice you wanted in your coffee keeps melting!"

The Prophet's Reward
continued from yesterday
Right after stating in verse 22 that the words of the prophet had to be fulfilled, Matthew refers to one of the most significant prophesies in the Old Testament.

Matthew 1:23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which means, "God with us."

That is taken directly from Isaiah 7:14. This is one of the most significant prophesies because it deals with the fact that the Messiah must be born a righteous man. He could not have been born of a man because then the sin of Adam would have been passed on to him. He was born of a virgin, conceived of the Holy Spirit. And He had to come from an extremely rare bloodline which would include many of the Fathers of Israel.
The prophet Micah proclaimed that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Isaiah and Malachi both predicted that the Messiah would be preceded by a forerunner, John the Baptist. The Psalmist said that he would be betrayed by a friend. Zechariah predicted he would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, which is exactly what Judas was paid. The Psalmist goes on to predict that they would divide his garments among them by casting lots for them, which of course the guards at the foot of the cross did.
One of the greatest prophets of all, Daniel, predicted that there would be exactly 483 years between the decree to rebuild the wall and the city of Jerusalem before the Messiah would be cut off, killed. Interestingly enough, exactly 483 years after the rebuilding of Jerusalem and its walls, Jesus Christ came into Jerusalem riding on a donkey and offered himself as a sacrifice for the sins of Israel and the world, fulfilling the prophesy of Zechariah 9:9.
So in this first chapter of Matthew we see a little into what his purpose is. It’s to convince everyone who reads these words that Jesus Christ is indeed the promised Messiah and that the Old Testament prophesies bear witness to the truth of the New Testament. Now we come to what I believe is the greater issue at hand. And that is the receiving of the Christ into our hearts. The rest of the first Chapter goes into more detail about the birth of Christ.
I’m going to divert from an expository look at this chapter into more of a topical look at the subject of the prophet’s reward and the power prophets have. I have titled this message, The Prophet’s Reward, for a reason which I hope to bring out.
We are going to go over to the tenth chapter of Matthew to key in on one particular verse.
Matthew 10:41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward.

As I was studying this whole idea of the role and power of the prophet I came upon this verse and it intrigued me. If a person receives a prophet he will receive a prophet’s reward.
Earlier I sighted many of the prophecies concerning the coming Messiah but the one prophecy the Jews struggle with the most is one of the most significant ones.
Isaiah 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.

This is Isaiah the prophet’s prophetic declaration that Israel will reject the Messiah when He comes.
The way the Apostle John says it is that Jesus came upon his own but his own did not receive him. God’s own people have rejected their Messiah. Maybe we should say, they rejected the idea that Jesus could be the Messiah, even though He has fulfilled every prophecy about the coming anointed one. Subsequently, they did not receive him as a prophet or even a teacher while on earth. This goes back to the second point of Matthews gospel which encourages us to receive the Christ into our hearts. It’s the word “receive” I want to focus on. Once we see its full meaning we begin to catch the significance of Matthew 10:41 which spoke of receiving a prophet. What does it mean to receive a prophet and what is the prophet’s reward?
It’s pretty much accepted that Matthew is the gospel to and for Israel. It is written for the Jews. Many of the Jewish believers had been persecuted for their faith, subsequently; Matthew tries to reassure them that there will be rewards for their faith – as long as they hang in there. He wants them to know that having received Christ into their lives is worthwhile.
The whole proof that Jesus is the Messiah comes through prophetic words, spoken through men of God, which were ultimately fulfilled. This whole thing has to do with the power of the prophet and the prophetic word subsequently, he advices others that it is always beneficial to receive a prophet because those who receive a prophet receive a prophet’s reward.

Being Creative With Troublesome Kin
You are working on your family genealogy and for sake of example, let's say that your great-great uncle, Remus Starr, a fellow lacking in character, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889.
A cousin has supplied you with the only known photograph of Remus, showing him standing on the gallows. On the back of the picture are the words:"Remus Starr: Horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison, 1885.
Escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged,1889."
Pretty grim situation, right? But let's revise things a bit. We simply crop the picture, scan in an enlarged image, and edit it with image processing software so that all that is seen is a head shot. Next, we rewrite the text:"Remus Starr was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad."
Beginning in 1885, he devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency.
In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."

The Prophet’s Reward

Matthew 1:22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet.

When I first read that verse it jumped out at me. “This all took place to fulfill what the Lord had said,” It almost raises the question; did this all take place merely to fulfill what the Lord had said through prophet, or did the prophet say it because it was going to take place? I think the answer to that is that it’s a little of both.
You could say that this took place because the Lord spoke it – and you could say that the Lord spoke it because it was destined to take place. In either case it’s a testament to the power of the prophet – or the prophetic word.

We need to get a picture of what Matthew was doing in the introduction of his book. I believe he is doing two things in this chapter. 1. He is establishing the validity of Jesus by going back in history. 2. He is encouraging us to receive the Christ into our hearts.

First of all he is establishing the validity of Christ by showing how Jesus is indeed a part of the lineage of Abraham and David by going over the record of the generations – which lead up to Christ. This would be especially important to the Jews for they believed the Messiah would come from that line. The terms “son of Abraham” and “son of David” were commonly used to describe the coming Messiah, and it’s very important for these two titles to be associated with Jesus because the Son of David establishes Jesus as King and the son of Abraham relates to Isaac’s obedience unto death.

Of the four Gospels, Matthew gives the most detail about the lineage and subsequent, authenticity of Christ. Obviously, during his day, there would have still been much skepticism about Jesus and whether or not He really was the Messiah. And I believe that is precisely why verse 22 talks about the words of the prophet. Prophecy is really the only way to validate something. If the Old Testament was not full of prophesies about the coming Messiah there would be no way to support our claims that Jesus is the One.
Matthew refers to prophets over 20 times in this book. However, we must keep in mind that all of his references are taken from the Old Testament. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Jonah, and John the Baptist are all referred to. Some might say, “Isn’t John the Baptist a New Testament figure?” Yes he is, but he was prophesied about in the Book of Isaiah and that is what Matthew refers to.
Let’s just look at this for a moment because that is in keeping with the nature of this first chapter of Matthew. There are 456 messianic passages in Scripture. 109 of them are distinct prophesies which the Messiah had to fulfill. When we consider that these different prophesies were made at different times in history, sometimes hundreds if not thousands of years apart; made by several different people from many different parts of the world, we just barely begin to grasp the odds against any single person fulfilling even 20 of the 109 prophesies. Tim LaHaye, said that the odds would be one in one quadrillion, one hundred and twenty-five trillion. Do you see what we have in the bible? This is not just someone saying to us that Jesus is the Messiah. This is God’s word proving through prophesy and historical records that on one else could have even come close to claiming that they are the Messiah.
