Prayer House News!
We heard some great testimonies of those who received a healing last week. God did some wonderful things in our midst. People who had been struggling for years are now free. Let's keep believing God for more.
---------------------------------
This is Family Week at Prayer House which means our schedule is a little lighter. No Mid-week services.
--------------------------------
Please Note: I will be traveling to Missouri to see my Dad. A week ago he had a stroke and is still in the hospital, unconscious. My brother Barry and I are going see him and pray for him. I will still update the blog each day but may not be able to send you the email reminder. So if you would save the email you received to bring you here - and just click on the same link each day - we can stay connected that way.

The Sermon

I want to start today by looking at where we are in this great Gospel. We just viewed the first 20 verses of the fifth chapter of Matthew which of course is the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount.
The Gospel of Matthew begins with the birth of Christ in the first two chapters. Then chapter three introduces us to John the Baptist and the message of repentance. Jesus carried that message into chapter four after he showed us how to get through the wilderness, or temptations, of this life by acknowledging the mercy of God, not putting God to foolish tests and by worshipping him only.
Now we come to what I consider the most important chapters of the New Testament Matthew 5, 6, 7. These chapters make up what is called the Sermon on the Mount.

As we will see Chapter five deals with the beatitudes and the development of God’s character in our lives. Chapter six shows us how to develop these qualities through the three Christian disciplines of giving, praying, and fasting. Chapter seven shows us the things that hinder the development of God’s character in our lives. After chapter seven we simply get into the account of Christ’s life, the various parables he taught, and the incredible insight he gives us about life. The book ends with the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.
We need to see the whole picture here. Let me give you the nutshell version of Matthew. First we repent. Repent (change your mind concerning sin), Repentance leads to salvation. Then we get saved (submit your life to Christ and be baptized). After salvation we seek to develop in the character of Christ. Grow up (go through trials [wilderness wanderings], develop in God’s character [sermon on the mount]).
The ultimate purpose of all of this, is so we can Serve God and ultimately fulfill the great commission. The primary point of the Sermon on the Mount is that we most successfully serve God through the development of His character in our lives. It really simplifies what many people try to complicate.
I had the opportunity last week to preach in the church where I had been a youth pastor 30 years ago. All the kids from my former youth group are married with kids – they are all in their 40’s. The most interesting stat that I heard was that most of them were still in the church. There is a reason why I say that.
I’m going to take a couple of minutes before we get into our text for today. While I was visiting with a minister friend in St. Paul – he gave me a copy of this book. It’s the American Dictionary of the English Language, by Noah Webster. This is a facsimile first edition. The word facsimile means, exact. So this is an exact copy of the 1828 dictionary.
Fifty two years after our nation gained its independence this dictionary came out. Noah Webster realized that if we were going to come together as a nation we needed a standard for the words we were going to speak. At the age of 43, Webster began writing this expanded and comprehensive dictionary, which would take twenty-seven years to complete. To supplement the documentation of the etymology (et-a-mology) of the words, Webster learned twenty-six languages. This original version contains 70,000 words – if which 12,000 had been published in any earlier dictionary.
What I want us to see are some of the definitions in this dictionary. For instance the word “education” is defined this way: Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable.

Cute Things Kids Say
The girls were heading out for a women's dinner at church when my little four-year-old granddaughter asked her mom why the baby couldn't stay home with Dad like the other kids.
Her mom explained that it was because she needed to feed the baby.
The little girl replied, almost like she was thinking outloud: "Oh yeah, that's right, you have the nursers, and Dad has nursers too, but his don't work ... they are just for looks!"

Prayer House News!
It's Friday! Isn't that something - I think it is. I'm really looking forward to gathering together this weekend to share about the good things God has been doing in our midst.
------------------------------------
Heath Young spoke for my brother Barry on Wednesday night. They had another powerful meeting praying with people until midnight. Barry said they saw a number of wonderful healings.

Gone in 60 Seconds
continued from yesterday
Once a person has repented he has changed his mind regarding a particular action or sin hasn’t he? If a person’s mind has been changed there is nothing left to debate? It’s over! And now that it’s over we are open to a different life – correct!

Matthew 4:18; As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

Jesus is walking beside the Sea of Galilee preaching the message of repentance when he sees Peter and Andrew. Do you remember how last week we said that God tests us to see what is in our hearts? I sort of wonder if Jesus already knew what was in the heart of these two when he approaches them and asks them to follow Him, because instantly they change their minds.
Matthew 4:19-20 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him.

They were gone in sixty seconds. Jesus said, “Come,” and they were gone. That has to be one of the most intriguing incidents in the scriptures. How does a man change his entire career all of a sudden? Then it happens again.

Matthew 4:21-22 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Not only do they follow immediately, they also leave their father standing in the boat. They walked away from their net income, which some of you might consider gross. Repentance brings change – change brings revival, first in your own heart, but ultimately to the kingdom of God.
Let me ask you this; to what ends are you willing to allow Jesus to lead you? If the spirit of God prompted you today, would you be gone in sixty seconds? I would venture to say that the only thing keeping us from an immediate response to the prompting of the Holy Spirit is some un-repented sin. What else could it be? When the air is clear you have all the freedom in the world to respond.
I believe Jesus chose the ones he did to be apostles because he knew their hearts beforehand. It’s very possible they had been tested many times in their life – long before they ever met Jesus. In fact in one of the other Gospel it talks about how they had been fishing all night long and had not caught any fish. Jesus tells them to cast their nets on the other side and they hauled in a record number of fish. Matthew does not give us that detail.
God knew their hearts and when prompted they responded. Lest you think less of yourself than you should, you need to realize that to a certain degree you did just that when you were saved. When you gave your life to Christ you opened yourself to his leading.
Many of your lives changed radically upon the acceptance of Christ as your savior. Some of you even had to leave your families (at least spiritually). Mom and dad – don’t make your children leave you – release them before hand so they have a freedom to do whatever God wants them to do.
As Jesus called Peter and Andrew he said to him, I will make you fishers of men. I don’t really believe they understood what that meant at the time. The whole concept of giving your life to the Messiah was a new one.
I believe they felt something when Jesus talked to them. Their hearts burned within them as he talked. They were in the presence of God and it changed their lives immediately. The same thing happens every time a person meets Christ for the first time. Last week was my spiritual birthday.
34 years ago I gave my life to Christ. I’ll never forget the day I gave my life to him. I responded to the altar call my pastor gave. I knelt down and an old German man – Bro. Hienneman came and prayed with me. Bro. Hienneman was an old man who come here from Germany.
He knelt beside me and asked me what I wanted. I told him I wanted to get saved. He said, “Then you must give your heart to the Fadder.” I said, “I have to give my heart to what?” He said, “The Fadder, you know - Got.” I said, “Oh you mean God the Father,” he said, “That’s what I said, Got the Fadder.” So once I was saved, I got the fadder.
The moment I prayed for Jesus to come into my life – I was gone in sixty seconds. I confessed everything I could think of. I did not come up from the altar the same person I went down there as. Everything was different for me. I still worked in the same place, but I was not the same. So in a very real sense – I was gone. I was a new person, a new employee.
I don’t think you can really have a true revelation of your salvation until you first have a revelation of your lost-ness. I came to the full revelation that I was not going to heaven and that I needed a savior – to save me from the hell I deserved. Once I realized what Jesus did for me – I was more than willing to become a fisher of men. The only thing I could think to do was to live in such a way that others would see their need to be saved. That’s what it is to be a fisher of men. We try to hook them any way we can.

Shhhh!
On a visit to the library I happened to notice a man and awoman, both deaf, signing with intense gestures, apparently in a heated debate.
The man said something; and the woman seemed upset. She started signing her reply very fast, to the point where the man couldn't understand a word; she also signed in big, wide gestures, which is the equivalent of volume.
Finally, looking strained, her companion took her hands,"silencing" her. Then he signed, very small and slowly: "You don't have to shout,
I'm not blind."

Gone in 60 Seconds!

If a person repents over something in their life what do you believe God would have them do with that? Don’t you believe He would have them bring that message to those around them who may be struggling with the things they used to struggle with?
Once we repent we are recruited to bring the message of repentance. If you are serving God in any capacity the underlying message of your service is, repent. There is no other message. Repent means, get right with God. The good news is that men can now get right with God – thanks to Jesus.
If you are a greeter in the church – hopefully your attitude is that of wanting to make the house of God a pleasant experience so that those who come will have a better attitude about the things of God and ultimately repent. The same could be said of those who clean the church, teach Sunday School, or do nursery work. It does not matter what we do for the Lord – we all do it with one message in mind, we are helping people repent and get right with God.
Please keep in mind that one of the things I am trying to accomplish as your pastor is to get you to understand that you can serve God wherever you are. You don’t have to be actively working in this building before you would be considered a part of God’s great army. God has many soldiers in the work place. That in fact can become your ministry if indeed you see yourself as doing everything you do with the ulterior motive of causing others to see their need of a savior.

To give you another idea of how corrupt the world was at that time of Christ’s birth – John the Baptist was imprisoned and eventually beheaded because of preaching a message of repentance, (that is when John became the literal head of the Baptist church). However, that does not mean that the message was wrong and the proof of that is that Jesus picked it up as soon as John the Baptist was no longer preaching it.
Matthew 4:12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. He did this to fulfill what the prophet Isaiah had predicted in Chapter 9 of his book.
Matthew 4:17 From that time on (referring to the imprisonment of John) Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." Once Jesus found out that John the Baptist was put in jail – he began to preach, “Repent.”
Now let’s go back to thinking about the condition of our world today. Doesn’t it sadden you to think of what our world used to be like compared to what it is today? Our kids cannot go play outside by themselves without us worrying about them. We cannot talk about Jesus in our schools; we cannot even say Merry Christmas in most stores. We are on the verge of Christianity no longer being the dominant religion in America. And in the midst of it – each different church out there believes they are the ones Jesus will worship with when he comes back to the earth. The message of repentance is just as valid today as it was when Jesus was preaching it.
There is an old saying that is still as true today as it was when it was first coined, “revival starts at the house of God.” How could it be any other way? Historically, the great moves of God have all began in some prayer meeting, some preaching point, or through some group of sold-out believers.
But what is revival? Isn’t revival a simple returning to the basics? The word revival contains within it the word “life.” If something is revived – life is brought back into it. Therefore revival is new life coming back into the church. So the question must be asked – how did the church lose its life? If it needs life where did it go? We must conclude that the life of the church went out when sin came in.
Listen to these interesting facts someone sent me. The average human who lives for 70 years spends the equivalent of 23 of them sleeping. That works out to about 8 hours of sleep a night. Additionally, Pace Productivity, experts on the use of time, reports that 19 years are spent working, 9 in leisure, 7 in travel, 6 in eating, 3 in illness, 2 in personal grooming and 1 in religious pursuits. Sad isn’t it that we spend more time combing our hair than we do pursuing God. At least us guys who are balding can say we spend more time in religious pursuits than personal grooming.

What an incredible conflict we are in as believers. We not only are trying to win the world to Christ but we are simultaneously fighting against the ongoing struggle of the flesh. When is the church the most effective? It’s when it is no longer influenced by the world. When the church gets entrenched in the world there is only one message we need to hear – repent! Repent is a simple message. When it comes to the practice of sin the message of repentance is – stop it! Just stop! Repent, change your mind. God will grant you repentance if you indeed repent of your actions.
Church we have become so worldly that yesterday’s saints would look at the church today and just weep over its condition, similarly to how we look at the world today and weep over what it has become. We have come to believe that carnality is the normal Christian life.
Gone are the days when we would seriously consider setting aside a day to fast and pray, just because we want to be with Jesus. When I got saved at 21 years old I went on a 14 day fast for the first time in my life – this was just months after I was saved.
Some of you have been saved for years and have never fasted. My life changed in a radical way when I met Jesus. When I visited Prayer Mountain in Seoul, Korea I found many, many people there – on their vacations, to do nothing but pray and fast. Today we won’t even go to church on our vacations – we are on vacation – surely God will understand if I take a spiritual break.

Gone in 60 Seconds

continued from yesterday

Jesus was born into a world of full of chaos. There is a 400 year span of time from the book of Malachi to the book of Matthew. The Jews were taken into exile in the year 587/86 BC by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. The City of Baghdad today is considered by many to be the modern day Babylon. Twenty years later Cyrus the Great solidified his rule of the Persian Empire and in 539 BC he conquered Babylon. However, Cyrus allowed all conquered people to return to their homelands. The Jews went back and rebuilt the Temple with the encouragement of the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, though they had to remain loyal to the Persians.

After many different rulers and nations controlling Israel, and after hundreds of years eventually, Herod the Great, backed by the Romans, became sole ruler of Palestine under the Romans. This was the Herod of infamy, the one who killed wives and sons in order to maintain his hold on power, and the one who ordered the slaughter of the children of Bethlehem in a vain attempt to kill the One who had just been born king of the Jews.

During this time several different religious sects developed, the most prominent of them would be the Pharisees. The name Pharisee means “separated ones.” They most likely received this name when they “separated” from the Hasmonean ruler, John Hyrcanus (135-104 BC) over a dispute about the priesthood.

The Sadducees were a rival sect to the Pharisees. They were the priestly aristocracy (air-a-sta-cracy). They only accepted the first five books of the Old Testament, did not believe in angels, the resurrection, or an afterlife.

The Zealots and Meridians are the final two groups mentioned in the New
Testament. Though the Essenes are not mentioned in the New Testament they too were a part of the religious scene. Josephus and other historians mention them. They were a frugal, celibate, community living in the Judean wilderness who shared all things in common. They believed they were the remnant whose task was to purify themselves and prepare for the coming of the Messiah. They gave themselves to prayer, ritual washings, Scripture study, copying of the Scriptures, and other books.

Within all of these different groups a religious pride began to develop regarding the coming Messiah. All of them were competing to be the group the Messiah would come to. Surely the Messiah would see that they are the ones, was the prevailing attitude among all of them. Religious pride began to corrupt what were the relatively pure beginnings of each of these groups.

This is the world Jesus and John the Baptist were born into. The Roman Empire was morally bankrupt; the religious scene was to full of itself to see the Messiah, and so the only possible message to get people back on track was, repent. A couple of weeks ago we looked into the subject of repentance and found that its original meaning is to “change one’s mind.”

John the Baptist came on the scene and tried to tell a pride-filled religious system that it had to change its mind concerning the Messiah and concerning who they were. And in fact the Messiah did come to the earth but not to any of their organizations. He came to a young virgin and was born a common man which of course, made him unacceptable to them.

New Policeman
A salesman, tired of his job, gave it up to become a policeman.
Several months later, a friend asked him how he liked his new role.
"Well," he replied, "the pay is good and the hours aren't bad, but what I like best is that the customer is always wrong."

What a great weekend we've had. Our speaker Heath Young spoke about healing and then prayed for people. We have witnessed many different healings. One lady's eye was opened. An eye she previously could not see out of. Many knees were healed, elbows, backs and headaches also. Our prayer room has been full each night - one hour before each service. Sunday night's prayer meeting was particuarly powerful.
-------------------------------
Tonight is the final meeting. Prayer starts at 5:30 and the meeting starts at 6:30pm. If you are coming and have not yet stopped in to prayer beforehand - please come and get into the presence of God - then enter into the service with your faith on high.

Gone in 60 seconds!

How many of you believe that life is different today than it was just a few years ago. I was born in the 1950’s and I’ve seen a lot of changes. My father was born in the 20’s and obviously he has seen a lot more than I have.
Let me read to you some stats about what life was like 100 years ago.
The year is 1906.
*********************************************************************
The average life expectancy was 47 years.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
The average wage in 1906 was 22 cents per hour.
The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.
Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.
Five leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars.
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!!
Crossword puzzles, canned soda, and ice tea, had not yet been invented.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write.
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school..
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores.
Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE! U.S.A
----------------------------------
When you hear stats like these, what comes to your mind?
There are many things that strike me.
1. We have advanced in many ways. We are no longer making 22 cents an hour, of which we are all very happy.
The title of my message is “Gone in 60 seconds.” There is nothing wholesome about the movie at all but that title will mean something in a moment.
It’s a movie which glorifies “stealing cars.”
The Star of that show, Nicolas Cage, made $20,000,000 on that one movie.
Since we are talking about cars; Jeff Gordon has made $58,000,000 racing cars. So we have advanced from the 22 cents an hour days. But have we really advanced?
2. We have gone backwards in many ways. Today the drugs we used to be able to buy over the counter are all being abused and have become illegal.
We promote and encourage pre-marital sex as a society, and we kill many more people today than we did in the past, and that’s not even factoring in abortion.
In 1906 there were 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.! Last year alone Milwaukee had 121 murders. That is over half of all the murders 100 years ago – in just one city.
Chicago had 448 murders last year. So at the same time that technology has gone up, morals have sunk to a new low.
