Devotional!
Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies. If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; but if anyone loves God,he is known by Him.
1 Corinthians 8:1-3
Knowledge puffs us. It increases our pride. The proud man has a false perception of himself. He thinks he knows something yet he does not yet know as he ought. He does not know in the way he ought to know. He's gaining knowledge through faulty means. The law without the spirit is death. Knowledge without a right spirit is death.
Knowledge that comes through humility is much more beneficial than knowledge that comes through pride.
The last part of that verse helps us in this. If anyone loves God, he is known by Him (God). The Greek word for "love" here is "Agape." Agape is an unconditional love that is based on giving. To love with an agape love is to love by giving yourself away. Giving up your life is humbling. However, the one who gains knowledge of God through humility knows in the way he ought to know. His knowledge did not come through some exaltation of his own mind and abilities. It came through letting God lead him.
The proud man thinks he has great knowledge of God yet he does not know what he ought to know. Typically the proud man's love for God is a love for what God can give him. That is typical of Phileo love. Phileo love is a conditional love based on what a person can gain. Many people love what they can get from God. They love how the knowledge they gain through the Spirit of God helps them gain positions of exaltation.

Medication: A Merry Heart
And Also with You
In our Anglican church, each service begins with a greeting.
The officiating clergyman says, "The Lord be with you." The
congregation used to respond by saying, "And with thy
spirit."
But, with the modernizing of the liturgy, the minister now
says, "The Lord be with you," and everyone responds with,
"And also with you."
One Sunday a visiting bishop went to a church where the
sound system was known to be old and unreliable. As he
approached the microphone, he tapped it several times and
finally said, "There's something wrong with this!"
Without hesitation, the whole congregation answered
faithfully, "And also with you."
