The Love of the Father
Joseph
I want us to consider Joseph. As you all know, Joseph was sold by his brothers into slavery. He is eventually purchased by Potiphar. Potiphar was an important man who had a wife that did not love him. Whenever he was out of town she would try to seduce Joseph. After attempting to get him in her bed he responds in Genesis 39:9.

Genesis 39:9 There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil, and sin against God?"

Don’t you find it interesting that Joseph says, “I don’t want to sin against God.” Why didn’t he say, “I don’t want to sin against your husband?” Joseph was a godly man who understood authority, but more than that, he had a love for his heavenly father. His love for his father created in him a whole different set of values. He was able to deny himself. The things of this world did not have a great influence on him. If he had loved his own life more than his father then he could have easily justified his actions. Joseph was basically an innocent man. His own brothers sell him into slavery, not because he did anything wrong, but because they were jealous of him.

He is first purchased by some Midianites and then sold to Potiphar. He is being bought and sold like a piece of merchandise. If he had clung to a love for this world he could have easily justified being with Potiphar’s wife. He could have easily rationalized any action with the full understanding of many of those around him. Instead, Joseph refuses Potiphar’s wife and says, “I cannot do this great sin against my God.”

King David
Now lets go to Psalms 51. King David did not quite have the same level of integrity as Joseph but he had a similar heart. His love for his heavenly father ultimately determined the outcome of his life.

Pslams 51:1-4 For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Thy compassion blot out my transgressions. (2) Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. (3) For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. (4) Against Thee, Thee only, I have sinned, And done what is evil in Thy sight.

Here is another case of recognizing that all sin is ultimately against God. David could have easily said, “I have sinned against Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, that David basically had killed.” For that matter he could have said, “I have sinned against Bathsheba,” but he didn’t. He said, “Against thee only have I sinned.”

Speeding Juggler

A young man was pulled over by the Mississippi State Police
for speeding. The officer stepped out of his patrol car,
adjusted his sunglasses, and swaggered up to the young man's
window. "What chew driving so fast for, boy? You going to a
fahhr? Let me see your license, boy." The young man handed
over his license.

Then the officer noticed that the back seat of the car was
full of large knives. The officer said, "Tell me, boy, why
you got them knives on that there back seat?"

The young man replied, "Well, sir, I'm a juggler."

The officer spat some tobacco juice and then said, "A
juggler; well, you don't say. Boy, put cha hands on the
trunk of yer car; you going to jail!"

The young man pleaded with the officer not to take him to
jail. He offered to prove to the officer that he was a
juggler by way of demonstration. He said, "You can even hold
me at gunpoint while I juggle for you." The officer
reluctantly allowed him to prove his juggling ability while
he held him at gunpoint.

Two miles down the road at Joe's Tavern, Billy Bub was
drinking it up with Jerry Lee Jones. Billy Bub soon left and
got into his old, rusty pickup truck. He proceeded down the
road trying his best to stay on the right side. All of a
sudden, Billy Bub spotted the most unbelievable sight of his
life! He drove to the nearest phone booth and dialed the
number for Joe's Tavern and asked for his buddy, Jerry Lee.

When Jerry Lee got on the phone, Billy Bub said, "Whatever
you do when you leave that tavern, don't go north on Route
109. The state police are giving a sobriety test that nobody
can pass!"

The Love of the Father
.
Shortly after I started praying I began to realize some things. The first thing was that my motives were all wrong. I initially started praying in order to get things from God. I also wanted God to use me – in such a way that it would bring glory to myself. However, the more time I gave God in prayer, the more I began to realize that I simply wanted to be with Him. Soon I was praying just to be with God. Whether or not God answered my prayers was no longer the driving motivation behind my praying. In fact I got to the point where I didn’t think it was even necessary to ask God for things. I just wanted to get to know him, and the best way to get to know anybody is by spending time with them.

Shortly after I started praying God brought me to Proverbs 2.

Proverbs 2:1-6 My son, if you will receive my sayings, And treasure my commandments within you, (2) Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; (3) For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; (4) If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; (5) Then you will discern the fear of the LORD, And discover the knowledge of God. (6) For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

That became my hearts cry. I would lift my voice for discernment and understanding. I literally spent countless hours asking for these spiritual attributes because I wanted to understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. I was so taken up with these ideas that I simply knew everybody that heard about the benefits of spending time in the presence of God would run to it. I assumed that everybody that was born-again had great desires to be with God and to learn of Him. I was mistaken. I found out, in a similar way that Jesus found out, that not everybody that names the name of God is really that interested in Him. They are interested in their salvation and that’s about it.

Wanting the benefits of prayer without really developing a prayer life is very similar to the challenge the rich young man faced. In order to develop a prayer life that focuses on God – one must be willing to give up what they have and follow Him. Whether or not a person would be able to do that depends a lot on their love for the Father. I have often said that the lack of prayer is from a lack of desire for God. Everything we desire we want to be with. The rich young man desired eternal life and so he sought it out. When he found out that it required the surrender of his heart. He went away sad. I have found similar misconceptions about the prayer life. Many people get excited about the things that they believe they can get from God when they pray but to continue into a life of prayer there must be a greater motivation than self and that has to be God. We must have a love for the Father in order to deny self.

Once there was a retired pirate so he decides to live with his brother.

The pirate walks up to his brothers house and knocks on the door and his brother answers the door and says, "Oh my gosh , what happened to your hand!?! "

The pirate said, "I lost it in a sword fight , but now I have a hook."

Then the brother said, "What about your leg?"

The pirate said, "A cannonball hit it , but now I have a peg leg ."

Then the brother said, "Well , what about your eye?"

The pirate said, "I got some dust in it ."

The brother said, "How could you lose your eye by just getting some dust in it?"

Then the pirate said, "It was my first day with my hook!

. I imagine all of you know that for 20 years I traveled with a great burden to see the church develop a deeper prayer life. When Lou Ann and I moved to Kenosha in May of 1980 (twenty four years ago), we moved here so that I could do some graduate work at Trinity Divinity Seminary in Deerfield, IL. We decided to live in Kenosha because of the cheap rent.

I worked a job that summer and then in the Fall of 1980 I registered for Seminary and began to take classes. It just so happened that on the very first day of registration First Assembly of God was hosting a prayer conference taught by Dick Eastman, called the “Change the World School of Prayer.” I remember being quite excited about it. I hurried so much to get from school to the opening session of the conference that I found myself having a nice talk with the policeman as to why my car was going as fast as it was. He let me go – with a stern warning to never let my son drive that fast.

That conference was on a Friday night and then all day Saturday. I found myself just soaking everything in. It really impacted my life and set me on a path that would lead to a life of prayer. I began to give myself to prayer everyday. I determined to pray at least one hour a day. This was not a simple thing. At the time I was going to work at midnight and working until six in the morning. Then I would go to seminary until about 1:00pm. I would get home around 2:00pm and then have 10 hours to do all of my sleeping, studying, and being a husband. It was in the midst of that schedule that I determined to give God a minimum of one hour a day in prayer. That hour a day graduated to an hour and a half and then two hours each day. There was a time in my life where I never missed a day of at least 1 ½ hours a day in prayer for a number of years.

I came to realize that I was getting a little legalistic about the whole issue because of how one time I skipped praying for a couple of days and I honestly felt as though I had backslidden to the point of actually thinking I was lost. I repented over and over for missing two days of prayer. However, it was during those times that God put something in my heart about loving Him that has never, and I believe, will never leave me. God was calling me to a ministry of prayer.

I remember going up in the attic of Lou’s parents house to pray (we lived on the second floor), and I would be so burdened for the church. I watched many times how great preachers would come and do their thing, and many of them were quite good at what they did, but then they would leave and a week later nothing had changed. Everybody was exactly the way they were before he came. I got so burden about offering something to the people of God that would change their lives that, that is primarily what I prayed about. Little did I realize that my prayer would be answered through traveling around the country, and eventually the world, teaching people how to pray. I slowly began to realize that the greatest need in the church was to teach people how to seek God.

During this time I would go to seminary, skip my classes, lock myself in one of their private prayer rooms and spend my mornings in prayer. Finally, when the summer break was coming up, someone suggested that I put together a teaching on prayer and take it to churches. I thought that sounded good so I took some of the teaching I received from Dick Eastman and started calling churches to see if they wanted to have a prayer conference. I ended up booking myself in a different church every week for five months ahead, before I even held my first conference. The need was obvious and pastors were responding. I never did go back to seminary. I went full time into Pray-Tell Ministries.

The Camel Joke

A guy is walking along a road to town with his camel. Along
the way, a driver stops and asks if he needs a ride to town.
The guy says, "Yeah," and hops in.

The driver asks, "What about your camel?"

The guy replies, "Oh, he's okay -- he knows his way to
town."

So the driver starts driving, gets up to about 45 mph, looks
in his rear view mirror, and sees the camel right behind
him. He says to the guy, "Hey buddy, ya know your camel is
behind us?"

The guy replies, "Yeah, it's okay -- he knows his way to
town. Speed up a little."

The driver speeds up to about 55 mph. He's driving along and
looks behind him and again sees the camel. He says to the
guy, "Your camel is still there."

The guy replies, "Really, it's okay -- he knows his way to
town. Speed up a little."

So the driver speeds up to 65 mph. He drives for a bit,
looks behind him, then looks at the guy and says, "Hey
buddy, your camel is looking pretty rough."

The guy replies, "Oh yeah? What's he doing?"

The driver says, "Well, his ears are folded back and his
tongue is hanging out."

The guy replies, "His tongue is hanging out? Which side?"

The driver says, "The left side."

The guy replies, "You'd better hold your course -- he's
fixin' to pass ya!"

The Love of the Father

Mark 10:17-34 And as He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and began asking Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 18And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19"You know the commandments, 'Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'" 20And he said to Him, "Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up." 21And looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." 22But at these words his face fell, and he went away grieved, for he was one who owned much property.

I wonder what it meant to Jesus to see a young man choose his “things, the stuff he owned,” over the eternal life he was offering him. Can you imagine that scene? The young man obviously knew he was talking to a religious man at the very least, and possibly even the Son of God, in light of the question he asked. You don’t just trust your soul to someone unless you trust them.

Consider his actions; first of all, he came running. He was deeply convinced of the importance of his inquiry, and seriously determined to seek out an answer. Secondly, he knelt before Him, thus revealing his humility. Thirdly, he came in the spirit of a disciple, desiring to be taught. Fourthly, he came in the spirit of obedience saying, “What shall I do?” And finally, he asked the most important question any soul can ask of God - How shall I be saved? He understood who he was dealing with and yet he walked away sad when Jesus challenged him to give up his earthly kingdom to gain an eternal one.

When Jesus told him to sell everything he had and give it to the poor – do you think he was teaching salvation through works? Do you think he was saying that the only way to get saved is by good works? I don’t. I don’t think what he said really had anything to do with what the man possessed. It had everything to do with what possessed the man. It had everything to do with his heart and the love of his heart. There is no way to be saved without a love for the Father. What is the ultimate expression of love? It’s the surrender of the heart. We surrender our hearts to whatever it is we love. In order to be saved a person must surrender their heart to the Lord.

Jesus knew that the rich young man did not have a surrendered heart. He was in love with his success and was in pursuit of figuring out how to have the best of both worlds. He wanted salvation, the best God has to offer, and he wanted his possessions, the best this world has to offer. You cannot have both. You cannot serve two masters. You will love the one and hate the other.

I believe this speaks to a great problem within Christianity in America today. We want to know how to be saved and yet have everything this world has to offer us. It would seem that this speaks to how we love our salvation much more than we do our Savior. We love the idea of going to heaven when we die. We love the idea of having a mansion on the hillside. BUT – do we really possess a great love for the Savior?

A Bad Dream?

Jemima was taking an afternoon nap on New Year's Eve before
the festivities. After she woke up, she confided to Max, her
husband, "I just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for
a New Year's present. What do you think it all means?"

"Aha, you'll know tonight," answered Max smiling broadly.

At midnight, as the New Year was chiming, Max approached
Jemima and handed her small package. Delighted and excited,
she opened it quickly. There in her hand rested a book
titled: "The Meaning of Dreams."
