Prayer House News!
Praise God our first weekend with our new "early" service went well. And it was good that we did that because in the second service we had to set up extra chairs.
The spirit of God was moving in our midst as I shared about the Healing Power of Relationships.

Pray, Hear, Accept, Go!

Acts 4:23-37 And when they had been released, they went to their own companions, and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, "O Lord, it is Thou who didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Thy servant, didst say, 'Why did the Gentiles rage, And the peoples devise futile things? 26'The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lord, and against His Christ.' 27 "For truly in this city there were gathered together against Thy holy servant Jesus, whom Thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever Thy hand and Thy purpose predestined to occur. 29 "And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Thy bond-servants may speak Thy word with all confidence, 30 while Thou dost extend Thy hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Thy holy servant Jesus. " 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak the word of God with boldness. 32 And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own; but all things were common property to them. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all. 34 For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales, 35 and lay them at the apostles' feet; and they would be distributed to each, as any had need. 36 And Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth, who was also called Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means, Son of Encouragement), 37 and who owned a tract of land, sold it and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.

The New Testament church was still in it’s infancy when Peter and John were basically arrested and questioned by some of the High Priests, scribes, and rulers about their activities. When we pick up the account in verse 23 they have now returned to the church body to report what had happened.

What we have to understand here is that they still had very little knowledge of what preaching the gospel would mean, or would cause to happen. Suddenly it has become very real to them that they could very well be persecuted. Isn’t it ironic that the greatest message ever, the gospel of Jesus Christ, would meet with such opposition. All we are trying to do is to save men from hell and yet that is the very thing they resist. Peter and John were being questioned because of healing a man in the name of Jesus. Somehow the healing of a 40 year old man was being looked upon with suspicion.

After they report what happened look at the response of the church in verse 24. And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord. Their first response was to pray.

The Sixties

The Sixties, yes, the Sixties. Time of hope, time of
rebellion, time for planning new ways to do things, ways
that could not be any worse than what was being done at that
time.

In contrast to most of the other movements of the time, one
very active group combined militant vegetarianism (not so
uncommon) with militant prohibitionism (very uncommon). They
believed, in fact, that the first would automatically lead
to perfect health. Eat only vegetables, love one another,
and the desire and drive to consume Demon Rum would just
pass away.

They believed that: "Peas would rule the planets, and love
would clear the bars. It was the dawning of the age of
asparagus."

This is it! It's the weekend. Have you decided which service you are going to be a part of?
The first service will begin at 8:00am and the second at 10:00am. Our first service will be a more traditional style of worship - mid-service prayer at 9:00am and then the second service will be very much like what we now have - more contemporary in worship style.

You Shall be Holy
Think of Moses – one of the men holy enough to appear with the Son of God. His primary objective in life was to lead the Israelites into the promise land. He is a type of Christ – delivering God’s people out of bondage. However, just before they got to the promise land Moses loses his temper, strikes the rock twice, and dies before he ever gets to the promise land.

Numbers 20:8 "Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink."

He is instructed to speak to the rock.

Numbers 20:10-11…"Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?" 11Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly.

Instead of doing what he was supposed to do (speak to the rock) he strikes it twice.

Numbers 20:12 "Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."

In his own mind he was probably the biggest failure of all. He didn’t get to do the one thing God had called him to do, and then he dies. Just think of it. Moses did something so unholy (not treating God as holy) that he is not allowed to bring his flock into the promise land. Yet he gets picked to appear with the Son of God on the Mount of Transfiguration. Why is that? The answer is simple. His heavenly Father is holy and subsequently, when Moses entered into the presence of his father he became like his father.

Men are like...

....Placemats
They only show up when there's food on the table.

.....Mascara
They usually run at the first sign of emotion.

....Bike Helmets
Handy in an emergency, but otherwise they just look silly

...Copiers
You need them for reproduction, but that's about it.

.....Lava Lamps
Fun to look at, but not all that bright.

.....Bank accounts
Without a lot of money, they don't generate much interest

....high heels
They are easy to walk on once you get the hang of it.

Men are like.....Blenders.
You need one, but you're not quite sure why.

Men are like.....Government bonds.
They take so long to mature.

Men are like.....Lava lamps.
Fun to look at, but not all that bright.

Men are like.....Noodles.
They're always in hot water, they lack taste and they need dough.

Men are like.....Plungers.
They spend most of their lives in a hardware store or the bathroom.

Men are like.....Used Cars.
Both are easy-to-get, cheap and they prove to be unreliable.

Men are like.....Weather.
Nothing can be done to change either one of them.

You Shall be Holy
Some might say, “What about the verse that says, ‘without holiness no man will see the Lord. Isn’t that calling us to live holy so that we can make it to heaven?’” Well actually, “no.” Let’s look at that verse. It’s one of my favorite lessons.

Hebrews 12:14 Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. (NIV)

Keep in mind what 1 Peter 1:15 says, “but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior.” Be holy in all your behavior. This relates more to how you treat others than it has anything to do with your personal salvation. Hebrews 12:14 starts off with something similar; pursue peace with all men. In the context of these verses the writer of Hebrews is talking about how it is difficult for us to be disciplined.

Heb 12:11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

The discipline being referred to here is separation. Separation requires discipline. There are times when God asks us to separate ourselves from what others are doing to teach us discipline. The reason for that is stated in verse 11. Once we have been trained by discipline it will yield the fruit of righteousness.

Righteousness bears fruit and that fruit is the salvation of others. I have said it before (by now you should all know this), righteousness deals with our relationship with men; godliness deals with our relationship with God. Righteous living generally refers to the right treatment of other men. It’s treating others the way God has treated you. Therefore, anything you do for someone else in the name of Jesus is an act of righteousness. So the discipline referred to in these verses is that of doing everything we can to show others who Christ is. That separation is called holiness. So he says, Pursue peace with all men (that’s rightousness) for without holiness (without treating them the way God would treat them) no man (your neighbor) will see God.

People misapply that verse all the time thinking it says that they must be holy in order to see God one day, when in reality, the issue of holiness in this verse has nothing to do with our own salvation – it has every thing to do with their salvation. Without us living holy – no man will ever get a clear picture of who God is. Without holiness, no man will see the Lord. We are going to see God one day because we are saved – not because we never sinned while on earth.

It’s because of this misconception about the requirements of holiness that we live thinking that we will never make it to heaven – all the while – knowing that anything that adds to the work Jesus did on the cross – nullifies his work. Isn’t it ironic how we believe in salvation by grace while we spend most of our time thinking we must measure up to an impossible standard?

I've learned...

...that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in.

...that it takes years to build up trust, and only suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.

...that you shouldn't compare yourself to others - they are more messed up than you think.

...that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.

...that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are politicians.

...that regardless of how wonderful a relationship is at first, the passion fades, and there had better be a lot of money to take its place.

You Shall be Holy
Here is where I think we make a mistake. We tend to think that holy living somehow relates to our salvation – that we must live holy so that we can one day go to heaven. And that’s not true, if you are going to heaven it’s because of the blood of Christ, which was applied to your hearts when you made him your savior. However, that does not mean we are not to live a holy life. God wants us to live holy so that we can become more effective for him today. As far as completing our holiness – that is something only God can do and it appears that He is not going to do that until we are with him in heaven one day. That is when we shall be holy because then we will be like him and he is holy.

1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known.

We don’t see things very well today because this world so clouds everything. We see everything from our sinful, carnal, state. However, one day, when we see him face to face we will then see ourselves in the way that God sees us now. God sees us as redeemed. We see ourselves as struggling with the world. He sees us as his child, we see ourselves as barely making the grade. Today we know in part – in heaven we will fully know.

What this verse is talking about is how nothing will be fully complete on this earth. Only after our flesh dies will we be everything that God says we are now. Even though we are to live holy today – it is still not a matter of attaining a certain level of holiness before we can get to heaven.

Violin Lessons

"Haven't I seen your face before?" a judge demanded, looking
down at the defendant.

"You have, Your Honor," the man answered hopefully. "I gave
your son violin lessons last winter."

"Ah, yes," recalled the judge. "Twenty years!"
